CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019

The 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup has successfully concluded after several matches within the sixteen host cities across the United States, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. The entire tournament was held from June 15 to July 7, 2019. Sixteen teams participated in this biennial international men’s football championship; an increase from the previous seasons of only twelve teams. With record television viewership, fan engagement, and attendance of over 590,000 spectators across the arenas, this 15th edition of the CONCACAF is the biggest season to date.

Mexico emerged as this year’s champions after the final match with the runners-up United States, held at Soldier Field in Chicago. Mexican midfielder Jonathan dos Santos scored a point at the 73rd minute against the United States’ nil. This was Mexico’s eighth overall championship in the entire run of the CONCACAF. Meanwhile, Haiti and Jamaica squared off in the semi-finals, with the former finishing at third place.

In the statistical side, there were a total of 96 goals during the entire 31 matches of this year’s tournament, averaging 3.1 goals per match. Jonathan David of the Canadian team had the highest number of individual goals with six. He was thus given the Golden Boot Award. Mexican attacker Raul Jimenez was the recipient of the Golden Ball Award, while goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa received the Golden Glove Award. The United States team was given the Fair Play Award, with its midfielder Christian Pulisic the recipient of this year’s Best Young Player Award.
